Chapter 10
Assets: The 95% Standing Still
Step outside and look at the parked cars. Not one or two: all of them, the whole silent row along your street. Each one cost its owner a serious slice of income, and each one does its job about one hour a day. The averages are remarkably stable across countries and decades: a car is parked ninety-five percent of the time: twenty-three hours out of every twenty-four.1 We built cities around machines that mostly stand still.
Now look up at the office buildings. Since 2020, badge-swipe data has told the same story year after year: occupancy hovering around half of what it was, decade-long leases wrapped around desks that see a human three days a week.2 Machines bought for the peak. Warehouses sized for December. Operating rooms dark on weekends. Everywhere you point the chapter-5 map at something expensive and fixed, the "unused" column fills up first.
